Placemaking 101: Creating Communities that Support Health

project-for-public-spacesAs we learn more about the power of place as an influence on individual and population health, the question arises:  How can we make places healthier?  One strategy is to take a systematic approach to placemaking.  The Project for Public Spaces defines ‘placemaking’ as

…both an overarching idea and a hands-on approach for improving a neighborhood, city, or region, Placemaking inspires people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community…With community-based participation at its center, an effective Placemaking process capitalizes on a local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential, and it results in the creation of quality public spaces that contribute to people’s health, happiness, and well being.

The Project for Public Spaces also offers an excellent primer on placemaking through its Placemaking 101 web page.  We highly recommend this website as a source of insight and ideas for engaging your local community in collaborative placemaking.
